What to Expect from Elton John in Mexico City
Expect a farewell, not a tour stop. Elton John retired from touring in 2023, and Farewell to Mexico is a standalone pair of shows built to close a gap he left behind. The pandemic cancelled his Latin American dates on the farewell run, so the region never got its goodbye.
“Mexico City has always held a special place in my heart,” he said when announcing the shows. “I was truly disappointed that the pandemic kept me from touring Latin America during my Farewell tour, which makes this return especially meaningful.” His last visit here was in 2012, for two shows with Ray Cooper at the Auditorio Nacional.
What Will Elton John Play?
Not the farewell tour setlist. He built a different set specifically for these dates, weighted toward the 1970s and 1980s catalogue rather than the fixed tour running order. He confirmed as much in a video message to Mexican fans this week. “We have prepared a special set for you,” he said.
Beyond that, expect what he has always done. He performs seated at the piano with a live band behind him, and the production leans on large screens and song specific lighting rather than spectacle. Because the stadium is open air, the sound carries differently than it would indoors.
Free Screenings Before the Shows
Here is something worth knowing if you arrive early. A remastered film of his 1995 Rio de Janeiro concert screens free in Mexico City on September 30 and October 1, both nights at 6:00 PM. The venue is the open air forum at Cineteca Nacional Chapultepec, and entry costs nothing, though you have to register in advance.
The film captures a show he played to roughly 40,000 people at Estádio do Flamengo in November 1995. That makes it the closest thing to a Latin American stadium show he ever committed to tape. Guadalajara gets its own screenings on the same two nights.
Where to Stay Near the Venue
Santa Úrsula Coapa has nothing for visitors, but the borough around it does. Coyoacán is the closest sensible base, roughly 6 km from the stadium and about 11 minutes by car. However, our Coyoacán guide is clear that the area sits far from everything else. So book it for the concert, not for a week of sightseeing. Roma Norte is the better all round base for a longer trip, with Condesa quieter and Polanco upscale. Centro Histórico sits on Metro Line 2 for the Tren Ligero transfer. Elton John Ticket Prices and Availability
Tickets go through Superboletos, the only official seller for both nights. That is unusual for a stadium show here, because most run through Ticketmaster. Checkout is in Spanish and in pesos. Face value starts at $1,207 MXN, roughly $69 USD, in the upper 600 Norte sections. Cancha general on the field costs $3,233 MXN, about $185 USD, while the Preferente seats run $10,980 MXN, around $627 USD. The top Diamante tier reaches $19,520 MXN, close to $1,115 USD. Service charges sit on top of all of those.
The promoters opened new sections in late September with discounts of up to 60 percent, so check again even if prices looked steep earlier. Neither night has sold out. However, anything listed away from the official page is resale, and the promoters have warned specifically about social media sellers. So buy direct, and treat a bargain from a stranger as a warning sign.
Concert Venue and Dates
Estadio Banorte is the renamed Estadio Azteca, at Calzada de Tlalpan 3465 in Santa Úrsula Coapa, in the Coyoacán borough in the far south of the city. It holds around 87,000 people and reopened in March 2026 after a full renovation for the World Cup. New seating, new sound and two extra screens all went in.

Planning Your Visit to the Concert
Getting There
The Tren Ligero is the only sane way in. Take Metro Line 2 to its southern terminus at Tasqueña, then transfer to the light rail and ride to Estadio Azteca station, which sits at the stadium gates. The fare is about 3 pesos with a Mobility card. However, the last trains leave the terminals at 11:30 PM, and the show may not end before then. So budget for a rideshare home, or accept that you might miss the encore.
What to Bring
Early October sits at the tail end of the rainy season, so a packable rain layer beats an umbrella, which security will not let through. Afternoons reach about 22°C or 72°F, but a 9:00 PM start in an open stadium means you will feel the drop to around 12°C or 54°F. Bring a real jacket. Also carry small bills for the vendors outside and a charged power bank.
Concert Experience
Doors at 5:00 PM against a 9:00 PM start is a long wait, so do not arrive at opening unless you want merchandise or a good general admission spot. Eat beforehand in Coyoacán, which is genuinely worth the detour and sits between the city center and the stadium. Mexican crowds sing loudly and know the catalogue deeply, so expect the ballads to come back at you from the stands.
